Animal Crawls: A new take on cardio

On August 7, 2011 by Juliet

eeggahhhh please excuse the following:

1) that i’ve become a fluffy tub of lard

2) the wind

3) at the end I mention “this has clearly worn me out” because I fell a few times during the filming of this.  I just took out the falls when I edited it :)

This morning I read “26 Things I’ve Learned: Training Edition” by Steve Reed (A FORMER HOKIE NO LESS!!!!) and he has a link there to himself performing crawl variations.  He is a lot more adept at it than I am.

    HA! LOVE IT!

We do a lot of bear walks and crab walks in boot camp, so I love seeing someone else do this stuff :)

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

It kicked my butt! I definitely plan on working them into my routine. I can’t wait until the winter when I get to do them around our indoor track. If the other gym members didn’t already think I am crazy: they will now.

      • http://www.followingfit.com Kristen

I WANT AN INDOOR TRACK :(

  • http://runningfromrunningto.blogspot.com/ Alison

This was awesome! I especially loved the intro with the “tractor”, which is so clearly not a tractor.

Big respect on doing this too. Animal crawls look ridiculous. Like an adult playing at being a baby or something. But they buuuuuuurn. I can see how tired you are at the end, and I also know how badass you are, so if that’s not an advert for tough resistance cardio I don’t know what it.

ps — can we have a bloopers edition with just the falls? ;)

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

All pieces of farm-like equipment are tractors in my mind.

And I MAY post it privately on youtube with some prodding.

  • http://unblob.blogspot.com/ cortthesport

Oh, city girl, sighhh. That is irrigation equipment for the soccer fields!!

Good Morgan only peed, that is the same place I do my barefoot strides ;-)

I’m quite sure you will feel that all tomorrow and NO you are not at all fluffy. Sheesh.

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

Meh. It’s red and mechanical. That makes it a tractor. Or tractor-like. Or “landscaping equipment.”

I told Morgan to pee there because of that actually. I just hope it doesn’t absorb into the ground before you get there.

      • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

oh wait, I see it says “water reel” on it. It all is so clear to me now.

  • http://funfoodandfreeweights.wordpress.com Alexandra

Dude that’s intense. God, I’d prolly just croak on the field, kudos on finishing the workout alive :)
By the way, your nail polish is AMAZING :D

  • http://bookwormlifts.blogspot.com Bookworm

That looks fun! In lieu of the music, though, you should have had an erudite English fellow narrate it like a nature show: “here we see the wild Joob, in her natural environment, performing her cardio ritual…”

p.s. I like your nail color at the end of the video!

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

That’s a brilliant idea. I need to go track down an Englishman now.

      • http://www.thefitwriter.wordpress.com Nic at The Fit Writer

Um…hi! I have what we call a ‘home counties’ accent (ie like the BBC) ;D

        • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

Nic, if you voiceover this video, you will be my hero. And I will post it on facebook for all the world to see.

Which I am too embarrassed to do with this video at present.

  • http://thefitwriter.wordpress.com thefitwriter

Morgan steals the show! I love the way she’s running about wherever whilst you’re talking but, as soon as you start crawling, she’s trotting right there with you. I might try this with Frankie! LOL!

PS You look great for a “bodybuilder not currently in prep or tanned up” to me so there!
PPS Frankie says HI to Morgan (and probably hihihihihihiHI! to Tokyo but let’s not go there)

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

I think Frankie would love it! That field was great because no one was around and she could just do her own thing while I worked out. If I had started sprinting though, she would have been all over it.

The first time I tried filming this, she decided she was tired and sat down RIGHT in front of me as I was crawling. I started muttering some nasty cuss words but it was too windy for the camera to pick it up heh.

Can Morgan and Frankie be pen pals too? HAH

      • http://www.thefitwriter.wordpress.com Nic at The Fit Writer

Sure why not! He’d love that! He broke up with his last gf when she turned a bit psycho and had to start wearing a muzzle in public. He prefers the free & easy look.

First of all. Fluffy tub of lard? Where? (FLUFFY lard??????) I think not my friend. You look awesome. Hello, top two abs with separation when you’re not even laughing/coughing/flexing.

Secondly. This looks much better than stupid treadmill cardio.

And finally….your dog obviously loves you lol! Cute :)

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

I was actually coughing that whole time. Just secretly. Not really.

It is WAY better than treadmill cardio… which I am off to do shortly *wince*

And she is OBSESSIVE about me. It’s obnoxious.

  • http://sweatlikeapig.wordpress.com Tara

I agree with Sable. You’re definitely not a fluffy tub of lard!!!

Your dog is adorable :) I felt tired watching this haha

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

I loff my dog. As Nic said, she steals my thunder at every opportunity though.

  • http://studentonahealthcraze.blogspot.com Ali (student on a health craze)

    Crawl Joobie crawl!!

Right, I need an open field, a killer bod (fluffy lard? what?!) and an awesome dog. STAT. I’mma get my crawl on (until someone walks past, when I’ll probably end up pretending I’m looking for an earring!).

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

Oh please do it! And then blog about it.

And don’t pretend to be doing anything. Rock your crawls. If you don’t want to do them in a field, do them in your living room. You don’t need much space.

If I do them inside, I can get the cat in on them too!!

  • http://www.sunshinenspice.com Meg

Um, this is kind of AWESOME!

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

HAH! I’m glad you enjoyed it :)

  • http://sweatanddirt.wordpress.com Erika

where is this fluff, girl?! you look awesome!
you totally rocked those crawls. i’ve tried some of them before..and i absolutely failed at the chicken walks hahah, my wonky knee was not letting that happen. the gorilla ones are my fav. go figure.
    love your nailpolish :)

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

OFF SEASON FLUFF ABOUND MY FRIEND!

OMG I *ate it* hardcore in my chicken walks. I edited that shit out. I also collapsed during my spider walks. Both times I got back up and kept going but still. I think my two favs were gorilla and spider.

I was going to try kangaroo hops but I struggled so badly w/ the chicken ones I knew kangaroo wasn’t going to end pretty.

  • http://www.cuisineats.com chrysta

This is awesome!!! I really want to try this once I find a nice grassy area somewhere.

And fluffy? psshht please. You look freakin AMAZING!

I love your pups hanging out in the background. haha. Made me laugh. Have a good one!

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

The beauty of them is that you don’t NEED a grassy area! You could do them in your living room! I did a test run of them in mine before I left for the field :)

And thanks, she’s almost as big a goober as I am.

  • http://ilovefetacheese.wordpress.com ilovefetacheese

if you are a tub a lard then i am a barrel of lard. you silly girl!

those looked fun -working out in an empty field is perfect to me

    • http://heyjoob.wordpress.com Juliet

wtf, you’re itty bitty (in a big strong way of course!)

Funny enough, that field wasn’t so empty. That HALF of the rec fields were… but in the field next to me was a big soccer game :D

  • http://www.onefitfoodie.com Naomi@onefitfoodie

youre CRAZY if you think your fluffy! girl you are ROCKING that cardio!! I do so many across the floor work like that, bearcrawl, inchworm etc…they are so killer for the entire body and I LOVE them!

  • Kpants

Ahaha, I think these are fantastic!! I used to do the first two ALL THE TIME when I was a kid (read: I thought I was a dinosaur), and I remember being out of breath from running around like…like…well, an animal. I’m definitely going to find someplace on campus to do these, although I suppose it won’t be as cool without Morgan running around in the background. You continue to inspire me! <3
