Meat-o-Rama!

On February 10, 2012 by Juliet

I love meat. (Take that as you will.)

No, I am not one of those people who is going to eat a steak in front of a vegetarian and laugh. I don’t care what you choose to eat and that is just stupid. Simply, I really enjoy eating meat. That said, I really enjoy quality meat and this past week I made two ridiculously awesome food purchases. Time to share:

Purchase #1: Steve’s Club Sampler (By Steve’s Original)

It includes some really tasty snacks I’ve been nomming on since I got mine in the mail. I haven’t tried anything that I have disliked so far (okay I have really liked it all!) and I think the “Krunch” (in the tub) might be my favorite.

One of the best things about these snacks (aside from ease), is that 15% of the proceeds go towards “Steve’s National Program“.  A program designed to educate at-risk youth in healthful eating and getting them moving. How friggin’ cool is that?  I have seen all kinds of pre-made, paleo snack thingers on the interwebs, but Steve’s Original caught my eye from a blog post of Neghar Fonooni’s.

If I am going to purchase a pre-packaged food, of any variety, at least a portion of my money is going towards something great.

Purchase #2: 20 lbs of local, grassfed beef

I ordered this online and picked it up after work today. It seriously took me all of an extra ~10 min to pick it up and get home? The box included eye of round roast, skirt steak, ribeye steak, london broil, 2 NY strip steaks, brisket, and 10 one-pound packages of ground beef.

With tax, it ran me about $170… which is a bit expensive at one blow but that will last me a good while and is worth it. (I actually don’t think it’s that bad considering what I got, either.)

BONUS: Christina’s Macaroons (originally Carla’s?)

I…need some practice with these…

The taste is AMAZING. Seriously, guys, crack.  BUT! They’re still goopey and they’ve been dehydrating for a while.  I’m going to just leave them in there indefinitely and hope they cookie-ize.

If not, I’ll just eat them goopey because they’re damn delicious (did I mention that yet?). I know they’re good because I taste-tested a few as a quality control check. See the missing spots in my dehydrator?

Yup.

I LOVE MEAT TOO. I’ve been wanting to try Steve’s paleo for a while now. I need to just make an order. I’ve heard paleo crunch is awesome. Macaroons look great!!

The krunch IS awesome. If you don’w ant to get a sampler pack or need to pick something out, I suggest that. Or some form of jerky. Both are fab :)

I keep intending to try the macaroons and haven’t had a chance (crazybusyohmygodi’msotiredi’mgonnapassoutby8:30tonight). I also keep intending to make cauliflower rice and even bought cauliflower last week, but I keep stealing a bunch of it to put in my dinner instead.

The macaroons are like crack. Only make them if you have a lot of wiggle room in your diet one day.

      I mean a LOT

      hahahaa

You can also get local grass-fed beef at Oasis — they carry Shadowchase and Grayson farms. I used to get a 1/4 beef at a time from Shadowchase but ended up with cuts I was not crazy about so now I just get it at Oasis. They also sell direct from Mikie’s 7th in Newport. The Mossers who run Shadowchase are awesome people, oh and they sell at the Farmer’s Market too. So if/when you run out you have options!

Oh yeah, they pretty much sell it every where down here. (One of the few nice things about living in the middle of no-where :) )

I really liked ellet valley beef company, I know a lot of people who are friends with the owners of their farm. Normally I just buy my beef at the farmers market as I prefer to buy directly from the farmer (less markup!) instead of Oasis or Annie Kay’s… My 20 lbs should last me a while though!

i don’t think that’s too high a price to pay for quality meat at all! i think we as americans have a distorted view of what we should be paying for our food. we think it’s great when we get huge portions of food for only a few bucks but never stop to wonder at what expense we’re getting this “food” for. i know you’ll agree with me that it’s better to have quality over quantity!

This probably doesn’t need to be said, but I agree 110%.
