Random Crap – 4/11/12

On April 11, 2012 by Juliet

You guys are wayWAY overdue for some random crap.

1) Today is the last day to enter for a nice rack. Yes. YOU can win a free nice rack t-shirt. Goodness, that sounds gimmicky. I should sell old cars.

They come in both mens and women’s for the record.

I don’t know if it would be inappropriate for dudes to rock, but I’d high five a guy if I saw him wearing one.

2) A really nifty book I pre-ordered came in the mail yesterday! Martin Rooney‘s Warrior Cardio.

I’m pretty excited for this one.

3) I effectively created the tri-wizard tournament of meat. I didn’t actually taste it because I’d already eaten dinner and wasn’t hungry (I needed to make lunch for today)… but my whole apartment smelled like heaven.

You see, between my rides from VA to NJ and from NJ to VA this past weekend, I listened to approximately 13 hours of Balanced Bites podcasts. Whether or not I liked the podcasts , (I did like them, but maybe not for that long) it got me wanting to eat all kinds of weird foods I don’t normally buy. One of them was liver.

Ick. Raw liver looks so gross!! It feels yucky/slimey too. I get the heebie jeebies just  thinking about it.

So yes, as pictured above, my tri-meat contestants were locally scored bacon, beef liver, and ground beef. I diced up the liver and bacon as small as I could then mashed it in with the ground beef. Additionally, I added some random spices from my cabinet I cannot, for the life of me, remember. I think one of them was curry powder… it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The final product? Tri-meat burgers!

Yup, I saved the extra fat to cook in later. I really want to eat one of these now. Damn it. I just finished breakfast. Why didn’t I have one for breakfast? Shame on me.

4) I feel like there has been a recent uproar against the ‘strong is the new skinny’-esque memes. I’ve considered chiming in, in my little corner of the interwebz at Hey Joob but I’m pretty sure I won’t contribute anything that hasn’t already been said. Plus I kind of sort of did it in this post.

Instead, I’m going to link you to a bunch of articles and see what ya’ll think. I would love to see your thoughts in the comment section. Ready…set….debate!

“Paleo Women are Phat” – Ancestralize Me
“Why Diet” – Strong Girls Win
“The House That Stumptuous Built” - Stumptuous
“Stop Being Full of Shit When You Celebrate Strong” – Life Beyond Rx
“I’m Calling for a New Paradigm” – Go Kaleo

Now I need to go shower and get ready for work. The lightbulb in my bathroom went out yesterday and it’s an awkward light that I can’t figure out how to get to the bulb. This means I need to shower in the dark until I call my landlord.

Bummer.

Just when I think I’m finally following all the blogs you read, you post these articles – and I’m only following one! They are all great articles, but my mind is going a million miles an hour and a proper response would be the length of a blog post.

I’m all for women being celebrated for being strong. What I don’t like is that these motivational pictures are making weight lifting seem “trendy”, which pisses me off. I’ve been doing this for a while, and plan on doing it for as long as I possibly can, and I can’t stand all these girls who post blogs with pictures like that attached to some bullshit plyometric workout.

My goals were initially to have a ridiculously ripped physique, but now all of my goals are completely strength-based. I’m at about 16-17% body fat right now, and I’m fine with it. I’m enjoying life, eating a wide range of foods and just focusing on increasing my major lifts. It’s way more fun than trying to diet down to some unhealthy, unrealistic goal.

But I would love a post from you to see what you think!

I hate liver. HATE. I was forced to eat it as a kid. And my mom used to order liver & bacon in restaurants. BLEHHHHH.

As for the “motivational” pictures, I’m torn. You know I am still very much into body building versus other forms of weight training. So part of me is always fascinated by the aesthetics. And I do have strength goals, too, but since I don’t work the same lifts week after week (except bench press), I don’t really have a program going to add more weight regularly. So I’m somewhere in the boring middle on this one.

love every single one of those articles.
and that warrior cardio book looks like it’s going to be awesome! are you going to follow the 12 week program?

I love the scent of liver cooking, especially chicken livers! I haven’t eaten it in years and actually would love to give it a try again once my food choices are left to me again…!
    I love the stumptuous article!!
Maybe the strong/ skinny debate stems from the same obsessive thinking that occurs when skinny is pursued to the exclusion of all else and an inordinate emphasis/fixation ensues. While a large amount of my time centers around lifting and eating to accomplish a goal (leanness) I’m under no false illusion that the form my body takes, is anything other than that. In the end, it’s the home my soul enhabits.
The metamorphisis that occurs is in my mind and spirit. I have never felt as sound mentally as I do when I am eating well and working out at my max capacity. I used to think a positive reaction was necessary from the world at large regarding my shape but I now know that I am the ultimate deciding force in pleasure or displeasure at the form my body takes. I am at peace with my current form but am involved in a science experiment in seeing what I can accomplish through perserverence hard work. It is my passion and passions don’t usually feel like work or sacrifice. I do it joyfully and gratefully!!
