Latest Hidden Gem

I had the BEST discovery today. One of those discoveries that makes me so happy I live where I live…. wait. Let me rewind.

My neighborhood is really cute. There’s little kids speaking languages I don’t understand happily running around everywhere and I love it, even if I don’t ever want kids myself. All my neighbors also have cute potted plants and vegetables! It’s so homey. It’s the first apartment complex I’ve lived in that wasn’t all college students.  HOWEVER!

Down the road is the most awful, ugly looking highway I have ever seen. There is a stupid chain link barrier between the North and South bound directions and lots of ramshackle buildings where one can exchange gold for cash (chaching!).  Admittedly, there are also a lot of really good stores on that highway too. Anything you could ever need, really, can be found there…. you just gotta get past the look.

Every time I go on it, though, I see this store a little ways off the road… if you take backroads it’s only about 3-4 blocks from my apartment. I knew it was some kind of produce store so I decided to go investigate today and get my veggies for the week.

Lo and behold…. it was a gold mine!

Just so you know, that far row? It’s longer than I could get a picture of and there are like…6 of them. It’s ALL produce! They had every kind of vegetable one could imagine and even some you couldn’t. Seriously, one could buy cactus leaves, aloe plant leaves, root vegetables I didn’t recognize, and at least 4 different types of eggplant. The real kicker is the prices.

Produce up here is damn expensive, but this was a nice change! Not to mention that everything was also very fresh, I didn’t see anything that looked old or moldy like you even do in the regular supermarket sometimes.

I got a box of tea, about a pound of sunflower seeds, 3 avocados, an eggplant, 2 zucchinis, 2 cucumbers, 2 cans coconut milk, a spaghetti squash, 2 green peppers, romaine lettuce, a head of cabbage, and bok choy for $23. At least I thought that was good? ALSO! If that wasn’t cool enough? They also had a really nice fish counter at the back. NEAT-O.

Next time I am getting cactus leaves. Anyone know a good recipe?

So, I feel like I have to comment now that I don’t see you….well, at all anymore:):(…….I already admitted I read the blog as a guilty pleasure and I say…HELL yes, you got a deal, I’m sure most of it isn’t local (watch your carbon footprint) but as long as it’s fresh AND cheap…you basically went to a dollar store market:) YEAH:) miss you, mean it!
