Day 1 (Whole30 2013)

On January 1, 2013 by Juliet

OOPHA! I kicked off this year with a bang. And by ‘bang’ I mean, I downed one too many adult beverages last night with good friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. What can I say? We go hard. That, and every time I drink with them my ability to be a responsible adult flies out the window. I’m a class act.

The partying and non-Whole30 approved consumption definitely continued past midnight, but whatever. I am 100% devoted to my Whole30, but I’m not concerned about an hour or two of indiscretion before it even started. *shrug* That reminds me, I think mentality is a big deal with this challenge.

Okay, obviously it is, but I mean it like this: there is no magical clock that says “okay you can’t eat this anymore!” or “it’s done now, so go back to eating processed food and grains”. It’s not about just doing it for the challenge, it’s about learning how to be the best, healthiest you in all aspects. Right now. Not in 5 days. Not on the first of the year. Not tomorrow.

I feel like waiting until a designated date to begin eating a certain way or exercising is silly. Why wait? I mean, the challenge requires a big commitment and I’m not saying you should go 100% ASAP. Hm. I’m having trouble putting my thoughts to words. Let’s use an example, shall we?

I knew I would be starting a January 1 Whole30 (along with the rest of the world that has internet or read anything ‘paleo’ related). Did this mean every meal up until today could be garbage since I wasn’t doing a paleo challenge? No! Of course not! I ate most of my meals as meat and vegetables. Sure I still got froyo (omnomm!!) the other day, ate junk food at the party last night, and drank too much, but the vast majority of my food was your standard meat and veggie affair with the sometimes foods in the sometimes category – not all the time.

Alrightalright, I’m done.
I don’t even know if I made sense with any of that.

Time for eats….

~8AM Wake up:
Still a little drunk and felt like death. Managed to down some water and sit in front of the TV in fetal position until the others got up.

~10AM:
banana & a cup of black coffee

1PM:
apple, 4 eggs scrambled in coconut oil with some red pepper, eggplant, onion, and tomato.

3PM:
remembered we made coconut butter the other day and had 1/2-1tbsp of it

6:30PMISH:
Made paleo pad thai with cut up steak (it was a leaner cut, I don’t remember what it was). We were also really feeling like loading up on veggies, so in addition to the ones she has, we added red pepper, carrots, and yellow squash. This required the use of a large pot.

Obviously today’s meal timing was not ideal, but there were ‘extenuating circumstances’. Ahem.

I want pad thai. I had a red curry shrimp about a week ago that was awesome, but it wasn’t pad thai :(

I feel like doing Paleo has made me stop doing the all-out-binge-before-the-diet-starts thing. I used to always spend the weekend before starting a diet eating everything in sight and feeling sorry for myself. I got back from my holiday on Sunday and knew that I would be starting the Whole30 today. Instead of letting myself eat two days of junk like normal, I just ate normal Paleo. I feel so much better eating like this and it just feels like a natural part of my life now :) I’m glad you had a good new year’s! Mine was completely lame and I didn’t even make it to midnight.

That’s WONDERFUL! I don’t think paleo, in and of itself, is a cute for binge eating, but it sure is a good place to start as many people often also discuss self awareness, etc. along with it.
